ocr: Ryokan Ryokan (1758-1831) was a priest as well as a - - poet, and published next to nothing in his lifetime. He travelled about the country - for some years, returning tol his native place near Niigata in 1/96, Later, he built his hermitage - - in the mountains. He would come down from his hermitage to play with children in the village and to beg for food. At the ageof sixty-nine, he met a twenty-nine-year-old nun, Teishin and the two became very attached, often communicating by exchanging poems.
